Art God : Chuck Close

One of our favorite art gods, Chuck Close, is an American painter and photographer who achieved fame as a photorealist through his massive-scale portraits. Seeing his work in person is staggering as most of them are over 8 feet tall. The hyper-photorealistic effect was created by working using a grid system, painting one square of the original photo at a time instead of the traditional free hand method. The super-realism along with every day nature of the subject matter produced stunning work. In 1988 he suffered a spine breakdown that left him severely paralysed. This didn’t stop his creativity as he evolved his style to include more color and working within a larger grid system producing photo mosaic effects.
